Richard Huffine
From his position in the Geospatial Information Office, he provides coordination and strategic planning for all USGS efforts related to library collections and services. He supports USGS Regional Offices and Science Centers in their efforts to collect, manage, and share information relevant to the various scientific research interests of USGS researchers. The USGS maintains one of the world's largest Earth Science Libraries as well as significant collections in the biological and life sciences.
Mr. Huffine has worked for the USGS since January 2007 coordinating library services across the USGS. There are presently 4 Regional Libraries and over 16 Science Center Libraries providing a variety of services to both the USGS staff and the general public. Mr. Huffine provides coordination and strategic planning for these efforts and has been leading an effort to develop plans to move the USGS forward both technologically and operationally by developing "digital library" collections and services.
Mr. Huffine is an active library professional and is active in both the American Library Association (ALA) and the Special Libraries Association (SLA). He is also an active member of the Geoscience Information Society and maintains a relationship on behalf of the USGS with the Cartographic Users Advisory Council (CUAC). He is currently serving as President-Elect of the Federal and Armed Forces Library Round Table of ALA and was a founding member of the Government Information Division of SLA.
Prior to joining USGS, Mr. Huffine spent a year working for the General Services Administration on the USA.gov portal and 10 years working for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in a variety of library positions including National Library Program Manager for the Agency.
Mr. Huffine has a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the Appalachian State University. He was born in Asheville, North Carolina, raised in Kingsport, Tennessee, and completed High School in Roanoke, Virginia.
