Dr Ortiz-Ortega holds a PhD in Social Sciences, Yale University and post-doctorate from Rutgers University, holds at present the position of Academic Advisor of the General Secretary at the National Autonomous University (UNAM). Member of the National Researchers System (Sistema Nacional de Investigadores SNI) and  International Coordinator of the Research Action Program Researching the Incorporation of  Sexualities in the Academic Curricula of Universities in Asia, Africa And Latin America (2004-2009).

Dr Ortiz-Ortega has held several academic positions: Acting Dean of the first University Polytechnic of the state of Guerrero (2008-2009); Professor-Researcher at the Center for Sociological Studies El Colegio de Mexico (2004-2007) and Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Women’s Studies Program at El Colegio de México (2004 and 2007).

Among the recognitions and awards she has received are: National Council for Science and Technology, CONACYT (1980-1983 and 1988-1991), Center for Advance Study Berlin (1986-1987); American Association of University Women (1990-1991); Population Council (1990-1993); Ford and MacArthur Foundation (1996-2000); Senior Adviser of the Instituto de las Mujeres Distrito Federal (2000-2007), among others.

She has written articles and books on abortion politics, sexual and reproductive rights and women´s leadership. Titles of her books are: Si los hombres se embarazaran ¿el aborto sería legal? (If Men Got Pregnant, Abortion will be Legal?, Population Council and Edamex, 2001); Cómo negocian las mujeres sus derechos en el mundo: una intersección entre culturas, política y religiones; Poder, mujeres y liderazgo: una guía inclusiva para un contexto global.
